The Baltimore Area Sports Health Initiative (BASH), in support of the Maryland Athletic Trainers Association, is proud to announce the passing of Maryland House Bill 172. This important legislation authorizes the State Board of Physicians to approve licensed athletic trainers to perform dry needling as a specialized task, a move that will significantly enhance the healthcare services provided to athletes and patients across the state. Sponsored by Delegate Kenneth Kerr(D-3), the bill will help improve patient outcomes and advance the quality of care in Maryland.

“The dry needling bill took many attempts over many years by several sponsors to get passed.” Said Delegate Kerr. “Past bill sponsors just couldn't figure out how to frame the argument in such a way that we could present a compelling case while overcoming opposition arguments. Once we figured that out, we got it done.”
BASH has been actively involved in advocating for this bill, meeting with local leaders and providing testimony during the hearings. The passage of this bill is a vital step toward expanding the scope of practice for athletic trainers and ensuring better access to cutting-edge therapeutic techniques.
Collin Francis, Executive Director of BASH, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “This is a monumental step forward for sports health and athlete care in Maryland. Allowing athletic trainers to perform dry needling will not only improve patient outcomes but also raise the overall level of healthcare provided in our state.”
This legislative victory marks a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to improve sports health and athletic training services in Maryland, ensuring that athletic trainers are equipped with the tools necessary to provide the highest level of care.
